NAMED FOR THE WAAL
A century-old Dutch shipyard, named after its river, with a second home in Serbia.
Vahali's history begins in 1923 on the banks of the River Waal at Gendt in the Netherlands, and the yard takes its name from the river.
In 2005 it looked south-east, buying shipyard facilities in Serbia and opening a metal-processing plant in Belgrade. In April 2013 it took over an existing shipyard at Zasavica, near Mačvanska Mitrovica, which after extensive reconstruction became, in the company's words, the largest and most important in the region. The Zasavica slipway can build and launch vessels of up to 3,000 tons. It has three independent stages that can be raised and lowered separately or together.
Vahali builds modern river ships, tankers and cargo vessels, and offers design and engineering, interior and engine-room outfitting, repair and anticorrosion work. Recent news from the group covers AmaWaterways river ships: AmaSofia left Gendt for her first trials, and AmaRudi was launched at Zasavica. The group has also built Beaver dredgers with IHC for 20 years.
The centenary came in 2023. Vahali employs over 350 people, including entire generations of shipbuilders, and its Dutch yard remains at Waaldijk 3, Gendt.

Exterior Design
STYLING FIRST
A Volendam studio that settles a yacht's look before it draws the layouts.
Theo Werner set up Werner Yacht Design in 1997, and he describes its method plainly: settle the styling first, then draw the exterior and interior layouts at the same time. The studio designs motor yachts from an office in Volendam, in the Netherlands. In 2010 Werner took on a refit study to turn a 1915 Dutch fast-ferry hull into a classic motor yacht. The name Orizzonte appears twice in its record. BOAT International credits the studio with the design, naval architecture and interior of a 26.9-metre Orizzonte, built by Willemsen in 2007. The second is a 29.8-metre Werner 98 RPH, built by Vahali Shipyards in 2020 and refitted in 2025, and her exterior lines are by Theo Werner.
Interior Design
TRAINED IN THE YARDS
Seven years with Feadship, Bannenberg and Heesen, then a studio of her own.
Kitty van der Kamp started her career in 1987 at Frits de Voogt, part of Feadship. She went on to work with the interior designer Jan de Bouvrie, then spent three and a half years as a draughtsman and designer in Jon Bannenberg's office. Back in Holland she worked for Van Lent and for Pieter Beeldsnijder, and in 1993 she joined Heesen's Diaship design team. A year later she laid the foundations of her own studio, and since 1997 she has worked independently as Kitty van der Kamp Interior Design. Her own studio designed the interior of the 38.34-metre Heesen Obsessions (1996). Orizzonte, a 29.8-metre Werner 98 RPH built by Vahali Shipyards in 2020, has interiors by Kitty van der Kamp Design.
